Hearing on jail killing acquittal adjourned


The Supreme Court on Sunday adjourned till November 9 the hearing on the leave-to-appeal petitions filed against the High Court's acquittal of six former military personnel in the jail killing case.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque continued the hearing on the long pending appeals over three hours starting from around 9:30am.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam placed argument on the appeals during the first day's hearing.
On August 28, 2008, the HC acquitted the six of the charge of killing national leaders Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, AHM Qamaruzzaman, and Captain Mansur Ali in Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975.
The attorney general's office filed five leave-to-appeal petitions with the apex court on September 14 last year against the acquittals.
The acquitted army men were Lt Col (dismissed) Syed Farooq-ur Rahman, Lt Col (retd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Maj (retd) AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, Major (retd) Bazlul Huda, Dafadar (dismissed) Marfat Ali Shah, and Dafadar (dismissed) Abdul Hashem Mridha.
Farooq, Shahriar, Mohiuddin, and Bazlul Huda were executed on January 27 this year following their conviction and death sentence by the SC in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case while Marfat Ali and Abdul Hashem are on the run.
